1 Music Video Evaluation

To prepare my music video I dedicated many hours to my story board which was in the form of a mood-board. this was really effective because it enabled me to have structure and work efficiently. The mood board style meant there was scope for last minute creative input, the images I used were for reference and inspiration/ outline of my scenes. As a result, I worked very closely with my storyboard and followed its structure. My variations in scenes and mis-en-scene played a strong role in why my video was so successful. My slick and prompt editing complimented the song’s tempo and beat allowing my video to have a thoughtful and powerful structure. I made an effort to maximise my mis-en-scene considering the circumstance of lockdown, and my level of planning allowed me to use more than one person with lots of different equipment and costuming as I filmed over a period of time.

To begin I used intertextual references of the time period, that also paid tribute to the artists in the band. My actors replicated the song’s lyrics, providing a subtle storyline. My attention to detail payed of as my use of the fish bowl-lens diversified my shot types even more, making the video interesting as unpredictable. The costuming and makeup and hair styles in the hots using the lens referenced the 00’s which worked really well with the lip-syncing because it made sense that the song was being told from the perspective of someone who fit in the target audience.

The main thing I want to make sure i improve for next time is the audio, more specifically, the quality of sound. For this music video I video recorded off a speaker which meant the audio for my video came out murky and ‘underwater’. I believe now I have to screen record off a music streamer like Spotify and it as a part of my clips in iMovie. Furthermore, I made a poor editorial decision to include raw audio for just fewer than two shots, my aim was to lighten up the mode and include silly, behind the scenes shots that showed friendliness. In the future, I will make sure that my footage is muted unless it plays some part in dialogue for the storyline. Three rotating shots were filmed the wrong way which disrupted the flow of my slick transitions and video in general, meaning this is something I’m going to have to execute throughout for the next video. As a part of the check list, my music video did actually show a lot of lip syncing, which would have made the video that bit more professional.

Some of the feedback I received mentioned how they felt a more established ending would have made the video seem complete. The ending was a standard pose type-action which I felt fitted well, but I understand why the audience would have appreciated an ending that maybe included a final transition or dismissive action. Also in my next video, I want to incorporate a form of mixed media, preferable animated effects and details during shots that could support the aesthetic and support the lip-syncing and storyline.
